ABOUT MARIANNA
I use movement as a means for creative self-expression, therapeutic rehabilitation and building community.
Born and raised in the east village, I found refuge in movement and theatre at a young age, discovering freedom and confidence in an otherwise inhibited body. (Thank goodness for Loco-Motion Dance Theatre.)
I connected to the deep work of Body Intelligence in 2017 while training with Brenna Palughi (mother of this modality) in Virago, our physical theatre company. The work developed new meaning after I was hospitalized with Guillain Barre Syndrome (a rare neurological condition that causes full-body paralysis). Throughout my year(+) long recovery, Body Intelligence movement work became a guiding force for healing as I reunited with sensation, mobility, strength and proprioception.
Witnessing my own body relearn, reform and regrow from essentially nothing has informed my work immensely. My body continues to be my greatest teacher.
In addition to training to teach Body Intelligence with Brenna, I completed a yoga teacher training at ISHTA yoga in NYC. I continue to study anatomy and fascia with Tom Myers and have completed a course in Pelvic floor health (which I am extremely passionate about) with Lauren Ohayon and Diana Zotos Florio.
I currently teach movement at HB Studio with The Hagen Core Training program in the West Village, and open group classes in Brooklyn and Kingston (see Class Sign-up for more info).
